I heard a famous realtor coach say that the two skills every realtor must master are the ability to focus and be patient.
In this week's habit strategy email, I want to touch on the second skill, being patient.
Why can't we do it as much as we want to?
And what can we do about it?
Have you ever thought of doing something so much that your heart starts racing, your face gets flush, your palms might even start sweating.
But….
You can’t because you have all these other things you need to do.
Might be life choices like exercising, meditating, making your food, or all the other family distractions that come into play.
You think to yourself…
“I have to do this and that and this and that”
To the point that you just want to burst!
This way of reacting to task we need to do is common. No matter how prepared we are.
The FEELINGS can overwhelm us to the point that it leads to stress.
So what the answer…
BE PATIENT.
Being patient is defined as - bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint
As a realtor, being patient refers to the understanding that your actions today will not lead to a result today.
Might be thinking…
Ok, I can understand that.
But, there is more to unravel here.
First, depending on your financial situation you might not have the financial means to be patient.
Second, which is the most common reason we are’t patient is because it goes against our identity.
Your identity are beliefs that you create based on a combination impacts, which are your…
personality type and your experiences in life.
The power behind an identity is that it can either cause you to take action or not take action on a task or anything you want to accomplish. (read this sentence 3 times)
You see its easy for you to be patient when you have tons of experience with a certain skill.
Think about it, what are you good at?
Are you a people person, a cook, a mechanic. Not by trade but by enjoyment level.
You probably don’t feel a lot of stress in those environments and you are typically calm, cool and collected even when things don’t go well.
For most of us, we create the belief that a task leads to a result.
As you can see this is in direct conflict with the real estate profession.
So what can we do about it?
There are two things we can do…
We can learn how to change our identity and we can learn how to physically calm down to be patient.
The way too physically be calm is to breath slowly.
A quick 2 to 3 breathing technique exercise will do the trick.
Just breath in for 4 seconds and breath out for 4 seconds.
It’s important to understand that our breath is tied to our heart beat. When our heart beat slows down our body and mind slow down.
When our mind slows down then we become calm.
Once done breathing for 2 to 3 minutes just focus on one task. Just one task and try doing it for only 2 minutes.
In closing, it’s clear that being able to focus and be patient are important skills to be a successful agent. The truth is that their is a lot more to achieving those skills than simply being told to do it. True control and freedom to choose is when your habits are aligned with the type of realtor you want to be. To learn this process and make a difference in your life join
