I heard a famous realtor coach say that the two skills every realtor must master are the ability to focus and be patient. 
 
In this week's habit strategy email, I want to touch on focusing. 
 
Why can't we do it as much as we want to?
 
And what can we do about it?
 
Have you ever sat down at your desk intending to prospect and then do something completely different? 
 
Are you kidding me... We all have!!
 
Even with a list of your goals in front of you. Your calendar easy for you to see, a checklist of all the people you need to call. Your script in hand ready to go. 
 
Yet, as soon as you open your phone to call someone, you don’t. 
 
How could this happen? 
 
When having trouble focusing on the standard solution given to all of us is. 
 
Remove the distractions. 
 
But, here’s something you probably don’t know. 
 
Our brains love distractions. Humans are built to embrace distractions whenever possible. If you think about it, paying attention to everything and anything is a useful survival skill when evolving thousands of years ago. 
 
So we are hard-wired to indulge in distractions, yet we still need to focus on what we want. What is the solution?
 
The solution is self-awareness. 
 
Becoming more aware of what is distracting you, what is grabbing your attention is the key to adding barriers to preventing it from happening again. To build self-awareness, we need to maximize as many senses as possible to stay focused. For example, if you want to prospect, read out loud what you are about to do. 
 
“ I am going to call Ryan and provide him a market analysis.”
 
In doing so, you are activating your ability to see, hear, and speak. It might feel silly at first, but I promise you will be focused.
